In a unique confluence of virtual and physical worlds, semantikon.com and voltage is pleased to present: META.NYM SEQUENCE: 4 Paintings by Joseph Winterhalter virtual: semantikon.com/medium.htm + physical: voltage 3209 Madison Road Cin. Ohio 513.871.5483 ARTICLE: Cincinnati based artist, Joseph Winterhalter holds a B.F.A. in Painting from Ohio University and studied creative writing and drawing at the University of Cincinnati, and attended graduate school at Louisiana State, Baton Rouge. A co-founder of VOLK/c.s.p.i., Winterhalter has also exhibited nationally. In addition to the suite of paintings in this series, he will be included in "Ideas into Objects: Reinterpreting the Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci" at the Weston Art Gallery in Cincinnati (April 2005) and, is currently at work on a major exhibition entitled "Leaving the 21st Century." The language of painting is the language of painting and Winterhalter leaves little to be mistaken, is adept. Tensive materials interplay (including wax, steel dust) with ardent processes and scale. The performative act of painting binding Winterhalter’s work to the outside world. "They act as screens, environments -- reflecting, and projected with the inevitable..." says Winterhalter. The inevitable, as suggested by the materials: sightlines shifting, the works fading. Meaning shifting. Meaning/ness decaying as the viewer moves about the room. As the viewer returns to the works again, wiser for the difference in time, each time. Four untitled paintings // (plant), (hold), (break), (turn) // suggest another inevitable. Taken at the value of rote ambience - "abstract", "minimal", a cursory glance (or cursory terminology) does not tell the story. A bold, albeit, enigmatic presence is at hand. A presence that cannot be mistaken. Taking up room-size swaths, the works move. Move over otherwise useless walls. "People don't like to not know what they're looking at but, in fact, always have known..." says Winterhalter. Work, unfolding as a virtual amusement park, vast, drifting. Encompassing - centrally, and on the margins. In -folding language, shifting coordinates: space to image, image as viewer. Decentralized - subject to interference and rupture, in the margins. Work, plotting the terrain between truth and fiction, examining questions of meaning/ness. Vehicles for apprehending contemporary experience... In this feature, in the shifting landscape this event unfolds from, more is at hand. Energy channeled. Work that moves in stasis, and, in the dynamic. Work that is. Work that is? And work that is both the tangible and the question. The choice, that one is aware. Something it is hard to be other than when it comes to Winterhalter’s work.
