Parking Lot Zen
I'm So Hungry

Parking Lot Zen
There is a slight hush of trees moving
an almost imperceptable breeze
a single bird
and a few scattered street lights it’s 2am

The world seems to have slowed somehow
my heart beating a steady 4/4 rhythm in
my chest
it’s just me and a cockroach
he just climbed down over the curb
but I know he’s there

My park bench feels like a small oasis from which I can watch the world
but not have to take part
The sense of distance is comforting
like the glass at a hockey rink
or the bullet proof window of a gas station
and it seems funny to me
that I should get my moment of zen
in a parking

I'm So Hungry
Godzilla in Tokyo
leveling the landscape
I am 10,000 feet tall
towering over trees and buildings
blocking out the sun
surrounded by screaming men and women
thinking - I really had a peaceful goal,
but I can’t seem to help ingesting a few people along the way
somebody’s always getting hurt
fingers caught in the car door
and sometimes it’s my own hand
sometimes I’m the one that’s screaming
but mostly nothing touches me except the memories -
which are like the bones of all those people -
pricking my tender prehistoric toes
like glass shards in the soft pink of my palms
so that every time I touch someone new
I remember those before and put my hands down
back into my pockets
and walk away
